Hello everyone and welcome back to school.
I hope you have all had an enjoyable week.
English
Sight words - have, he, into, like, must, new, no, now
Phonic sounds - ST, NT and FT
(strong, star, tent, hunt, gift, soft etc)
This week in our English focus we looked at our sight words and new phonic sounds.
We read a raz kids book together in the morning three times a week and on the other days we play a word game called puchu spider where we try to be thinkers and work together to work out what sentence is on the board.
Raz - Kids
I have added three books to their reading assignments,
these books will be should be able to be read by your child
they have been selected to have your child think about different environments
and the animals that live there.
Next week
Sight words - on, our, out, please, pretty, ran, ride, saw
Phonics sounds - LT, PT and XT
(belt, salt, kept, empty, next, extra)
Maths
In maths this week we reviewed flat and solid shapes.
Practiced using our new knowledge of ones, tens, hundreds and thousands
with subtraction and addition.
Twice a week we will be challenging ourselves with five minute math drills,
once for subtraction and once for addition.
The aim of these drills is not to compete with our friends but to compete with ourselves
from the previous week. This will help us improve our fast maths skills and build our
confidence with how numbers work.
Unit of Inquiry
We have started our new unit
Sharing the planet
Currently we are learning about different biomes (environments) on our plant
from the arctic all the way through to the desert.
We looked at posters of some of the different biomes and circled things that our
groups thought were interesting.
Some questions we asked ourselves were -
What animals live there?
Why do you think they live there?
Are their trees and plants?
What colours do you see?
Why do you think those colours are there?
Would you like to live there?
Is it hot or cold?
Next week
We will be continuing to investigate different biomes and
narrow down to 4 or 5 ones we find interesting.
If you wish to continue their learning at home I recomend watching nature documentaries
Park
We have been avoiding using our gym in favor of going to the park so that we get ample excerise and a healthy dose of vitamin D.
However as it is starting to get hotter we have been making sure that everyone is using their bug spray and sunscreen. We are also ensuring that we take regular rests and water breaks so that we hydrated and avoid the possibility of heat stroke.
Homework
Homework will be given on Friday but is not due until the following Thursday
In your homework packets this week you will find -
Sight words
Phonics blended sounds
Maths review
Japanese
Homework is an important part of helping your child reinforce what they have been learning in class and to build their confidence in the knowledge they have.
It is also used to help them learn balance, I teach them that it should not be completed all at once (unless they want to) but should be done in small amounts inbetween play and their regular home life.
Important Information
As per the adminitration's guide we are trying to enforce social distancing in our classroom
Please remember that we request your child bring the following items to class each day
2 x masks (named)
place mat
picnic mat
toothbrush and cup
small towel for drying their hands
We will be sending home these items daily as well as their hats on Friday.
Should you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.
