Nepal and ICF

Hello parents of Kindergarten A

I hope that you all enjoyed yourselves at our International Children's Festival on Friday, I know that our class really enjoyed learning about Nepal and their culture and from what I heard from all our classmates that they really enjoyed learning about so many different countries, and Turkish ice-cream!

English

This week we have been reviewing our past sight words, practicing our handwriting and continuing to work on our phonic books.

Math

We have continued our studies into skip counting, everyone is pretty confident with skip counting by
2's or 5's but we have been seeing a few kids really challenge themselves by trying 9's, 25's and even 12's.

We also have been enjoying using the dice again for different addition sums and a few classmates have been challenging each other to addition races!

Unit of Inquiry

As our chosen country for International Childrens' Festival was Nepal we decided to have a look at all the different types of things that made Nepal, well, Nepal! We looked into there food, buildings, cultural stories, monster stories (Yeti) landmarks of their countries (Mt Everest).

We then made decorations, puzzles and crafts to be played and displayed in the grade 2 room for the festival.

We were all very proud of our giant Mt Everest mural and can't wait to display it back in our room on the 12th floor.

This coming week we are going to be looking at Medieval England, their knights, their castles, their stories and legends as well as food, fashion and weapons.

Should you have anything that could contribute to our discussions please feel free to email me or have your child bring in any object or book that relates to our topic.

Going away party for Kazushi

On Thursday we said goodbye to our classmate Kazushi as he travels to America for two months. He will be rejoining us in December and we are all looking forward to the amazing stories he will have for us when he returns.

Best of luck Kazushi!

Hello parents of Kindergarten A!

I hope you have enjoyed your long weekend and are looking forward to International Culture Festival!

This week in Kinder we have been continuing our studied of ancient civilizations with a focus on Japan!

We looked at our family kamon, yokai, important people from Japanese history, clothing and Ukiyo-e pictures of Osaka from the sengoku and meiji periods.

English

We have continued to practice our sight words, phonics and our handwriting.

More and more members of our class are enjoying writing letters to each other inviting them to games around the classroom.

Maths

In our maths class we practiced skip counting, and reinforced our knowledge of addition and subtraction

Police Presentation

This week we had the local police come in and talk with all of us about road safety, stranger danger and how to protect ourselves when out in the community.

We all found it very interesting and we took time in class to discuss different situations and what we should do.

I have also suggested to students to have a special password with their parents, where do go if you feel unsafe as well as other useful information.

Being big sisters and brothers

This week we also spent time getting to know our friends in preschool.

We showed them the yoga and toys we use in class. Our dance moves and favorite songs and most importantly how to play nicely with others, how to share, how to ask for toys and how to be responsible.

Weeks 17 and 18

Hello parents of Kindergarten A

I decided to combine this week and last week together in this blog as both were short weeks.

Unit of Inquiry

We have really been enjoying our studies of ancient civilisations! So many of us have been very curious about how people lived so long ago, the different ways they wrote down their stories, the different foods they ate, what they wore and what they would do in their day to day activities.

Many of us were surprised that both the Roman and Greek civilisations had and enjoyed bathhouses, just like Japan! We also learned about a Greek hero named Hercules and the tasks he had to complete.

In the last few days we have been learning about the city of Pompeii. We knew from our last unit the power of volcanoes and we were able to use that knowledge to discuss what happened in Pompeii. We were all fascinated with how much we could learn because the city of buried so quickly. Many of us were quick to recognise that the city was Roman use the the art and buildings!

English

Due to the short weeks we have been doing a review of our sight words and phonics. We have also been practising our writing by sending letters to each other, using whiteboards, our phonic books and playing words games on the smart board.

Maths

Again due to the short weeks we have been honing our knowledge of the maths skills we already have. We have been using our maths centres and Ms Bel's dice to get different numbers to add together. playing different maths board games, practising symmetry drawing and naming different 2D and 3D shapes.

PE

We have been having a great time with Mr Soydan practising our tumbles and exercising.
