Week 10 - Numeracy Week

Hello parents of Kindergarten A

I hope that you have enjoyed your week this week as much as we enjoyed looking at
different kinds of maths and how it affects our lives.

English

This week in English our sight words were cost, bunk, bank and fond. We looked at these
everyday, practised writing them and used them in a sentence everyday as well.

We did more work in our phonics books, it got a little tricky this week as we were using a
crossword puzzle for the first time but we did a great job by helping each other.

We also learned a new game called spider! Where as a class we choose different letters of
the alphabet and try to guess a word or sentence. Western parents my know this game as
hangman.

Next week our sight words are - Milk, gust hand and next
Next week our phonic sounds are - SCR and STR
(three letter blended)

Maths

This week we have started to focus more on telling the time. The hours and o’clock is
relatively easy for us. However skip counting by five around the outside to get the minutes
has been a little more tricky.

I have included an example in the homework however it is a challenge page to see who
finds the skip counting to be easier and who needs a little more focus. So please do not worry
if your child struggles a little with writing the time accurately.

Numeracy Week

We had a great time looking at different maths idea in Numeracy week this week.
We were also introduced to the concept of money by earning Yen in class and using that for
market day this Friday to buy anything we wanted from the Abroad store.

This concept will be brought up later in the year in Kindergarten but it
was a fantastic introduction.

Next week we will be looking at analogue to digital time and being about to
read both accurately.

Unit of Inquiry

This week we have been pooling our knowledge of cause and effect, how the water cycle
works, erosion and how humans affect the environment around them.
We started this week with erosion, we learned about plant roots, how they hold soil
together even in heavy rain and even when a plant has died it can still help against erosion.

I introduced three baby mint plant cuttings to the class so they can learn about how plants
feed and what healthy roots look like before they go into the soil. The whole class has been
enjoying the plants but no one is really a fan of the smell.

We took a closer look at mudslides and floods and their effects on the environment,
I was very impressed with the conclusions that everyone came up with!

We also looked at the entire water cycle from the water’s evaporation over the oceans to
form clouds to their eventual precipitation falling over the land and their final journey back
to the ocean again. Everyone was really excited to learn this as it had been a burning
question on our board for a few weeks!

Finally we looked at how not only humans but animals change the environment
where they live to suit them better or to make life easier. From humans building buildings
or rabbits digging burrows.

Birthday Party

This week we celebrated the birthdays of Sule and Yuito!

Farewell San

This week we also bid farewell to San, we are sad to see you go but wish you
all the best on the next step in your journey!

Remember us fondly and we all hope to see you again somewhere in the future!

Play time

On days where it was too hot to go to the park we played games in the gym
with Kindergarten B. We played lots of group games but also learned to meditate!

We also had a lot of fun running around in the park on cooler days.

As you know next week is a three day week due to the G20 summit.
From Monday 24th to Wednesday 26th.

Due to missing Thursday and Friday we have scheduled a Japanese lesson

Week 9

Blog post Week 9

Hello parents of Kindergarten A

I hope you have had a good week. It was a great one for us as we have been studying
weather and especially EXTREME weather. The different weather patterns and clouds
made for some great conversations about the different weather conditions we have all
experienced.

English

In English this week we focused on the sight words of pond, husk, limp and soft.

Husk was a new word to a lot of the members of our class so we spent a bit of time
working out how to use it in a sentence.

We also spent a lot of time going over the phonic bonds of MP,LP and ND. A few words
were easy to come up with like lamp, jump, end or send but we had a bit of trouble coming up
with many words for LP except for help and gulp. Maybe you can think of a few at home?

Sight words for next week - Cost, Bunk, Bank, Fond.

Maths

As we finished up our attention on using number lines to help with addition and subtraction
we started to turn our focus on learning to read an analogue clock.

We have learned about the face, hours, minutes. We also learned about the long and short
hands and what they mean when reading the time.  The struggle has been from learning that
the minutes goes in groups of five and are different from the number written.

It can be quite confusing so we will be looking into this and trying to read the time as much
during the week and between classes as possible.

Please consider having your child try to read the clock at home or in the park on weekends.
I’m sure they would love to show you what they have learned so far.

Unit of Inquiry

It has been a BIG week during our inquiry time as we are pivoting from what were have
been learning to how we can apply it!

Last week we finished up learning about all kinds of extreme weather like mudslides,
flooding, typhoons, monsoons etc.

This week we discussed cause and effect. What causes typhoons? Or mudslides? Do
humans have an effect?

Finally how does weather like that effect us, animals and the environment? For example
mudslides are caused by heavy rain and usually erosion. Humans may have caused that
through cutting down too many trees, mining or development.

The effect on the environment is extreme changes to the mountain side, local communities,
damage caused to human and animal homes as well as remaining plant life.

Art and Craft and Japanese

During our art and craft and our Japanese lessons we spent time making wonderful fathers day gift for you to enjoy. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed making them.

Parents visit day.

We really enjoyed having you in our classroom for the morning meeting and the share in a craft together. I know the kids were very excited to be able to show you all the paper craft skills they have been learning and using on a daily basis. I apologise for not taking a group photo as I would have loved to have hung it up in our class.

We can’t wait to have you back again for another activity and should you have any photos you wish to share please post them in the comments section below for everyone to enjoy.
